Cranefly Research

Summary

This research is ongoing and is being carried out in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada.

In 2002 we developed techniques to examine and handle cranefly larvae and adults. We also developed indicators that confirmed that newly hatched larvae were killed by nematodes.

The presence of adult craneflies/larvae damage appears to be in localized areas and does not appear extensive. Few adults were noted in scattered localities of the Lower mainland. These observations were incidental and not as part of an extensive survey.

The fall efficacy trials are underway and plots will be examined in June-July /03.

In 2002 we ran an efficacy trial of nematodes on mature larvae. Techniques were developed to set up terrariums with known number of cranefly larvae. this experimetn will be repeated in 2003.

Cranefly larval emergence from eggs was determined to be 30 days at room temperature.

Petri dish trials indicate that nematodes are effective on newly emerged cranefly larvae.

Funding is shared by the Western Canada Turfgrass Association and Investment Agriculture of BC. Parameters are set by ES Crop Consult.Ltd.
